It is one of the strongest paramagnetic substances with dysprosium oxide. Holmium oxide is one of the components of erbium oxide. In natural state, the holmium oxide often coexists with the trivalent oxides of lanthanide elements, which requires a special method to separate them. Holmium oxide can be used in the preparation of special colors of glass. There is a series of sharp peaks in the visible absorption spectrum of glass and solution containing holmium oxide, which is traditionally used as a calibration standard for spectrometers.
