Niobium carbide is a green cubic crystal with a metallic luster, which belongs to the cuboid system of sodium chloride.
The relative density is 8.47, the lattice constant a=0.447nm,
The melting point is 2300 degrees centigrade. The microhardness is >235 Gpa (>2400 kg/mm2), and [1] is harder than corundum. Insoluble in cold and hot hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid, dissolved in a mixed solution of hot hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. It is stable at 1000~1100 C and rapidly oxidizes to five niobium oxide at more than 1100 C. Niobium carbide in fusible titanium carbide, zirconium carbide, tungsten carbide and other compounds, and together produce isomorphous mixture solution.
