Niobium is a gray and white metal with a melting point of 2468 C, a boiling point of 4742 degrees C, and a density of 8.57 grams per cubic centimeter. Niobium is a lustrous gray metal, with paramagnetic, belonging to the 5 family on the periodic table of the element. The ductility of high purity niobium metal is high, but it will harden with the increase of impurity content. Its outermost electron layer arrangement and the other 5 elements are very different. The same phenomenon also appears on the ruthenium (44), rhodium (45) and palladium (46) elements before and after.
 
Room temperature niobium is stable in air, hot in oxygen can not be completely oxidized under high temperature, and sulfur, nitrogen and carbon compounds directly, can form an alloy with titanium, zirconium, hafnium, tungsten. No effect with inorganic acid or alkali, not soluble in aqua regia, but soluble in hydrofluoric acid. The oxidation states of niobium are - 1, + 2, +3, +4 and +5, of which the +5 valence compounds are the most stable.
The niobium metal is extremely stable in the air at room temperature and does not act with the air. Although it has a higher melting point (2468 C) in a single state, its density is lower than that of other refractory metals. Niobium can also resist various kinds of erosion and form a dielectric oxide layer.

The pure niobium is used in the electron tube to remove the residual gas. The niobium doped in steel can improve the oxidation resistance of steel at high temperature and improve the welding performance of the steel. Niobium is also used in the manufacture of high temperature cermets
