Tungsten carbide (Tungsten Carbide) is a compound consisting of tungsten and carbon. The molecular formula is WC with a molecular weight of 195.85.

It is a black six - party crystal with metallic luster and similar hardness to diamond. It is a good conductor of electricity and heat. Tungsten carbide is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, and is easily dissolved in the mixed acid of nitric acid hydrofluoric acid. Pure tungsten carbide is fragile. If a small amount of titanium, cobalt and other metals are added, the brittleness can be reduced. As the tungsten carbide cutting tool steel, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide is often added or mixtures thereof, in order to improve the anti explosion capacity. Production methods:

With tungsten and carbon as raw material, the average grain size of 3~5 mu m tungsten powder and other material quantity of carbon black by ball mill dry mixing, mixing, molding and put into a graphite plate, then in graphite resistance furnace or induction furnace is heated to 1400~1700 DEG C, the best control in 1550~1650 C

In the hydrogen gas flow, W2C was first generated and WC was reacted at high temperature. Or first, six carbonyl tungsten will be decomposed into tungsten powder at 650~1000 CO and then it will react with carbon monoxide at 1150 C to get WC. When the temperature is higher than the temperature, W2C can be generated.
